How to replace windows notepad with notepad 2

If you havn't heard of or used notepad2 yet, then this is an update that you'll love! Notepad2 is notepad.exe wearing a sexy red dress. It is still VERY lightweight as the naked notepad but comes with a ton of useful features. My personal favourites are; line numbering, the ability to tab several lines at a time, favourites (just like in IE) and COLOUR CODING!. With this replacement, source code viewing in IE will now be as good as the source code viewing in firefox...with the ability to edit.

First you need to optain a copy of the amazing notepad2. Click here to download 

Follow these instructions under Windows XP 

  1. Tools->Folder Options->View uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
  1. rename Notepad2.exe notepad.exe
  2. copy notepad.exe %windir%/system32\dllcache 
  3. copy notepad.exe %windir%/system32 
  4. A dialog will popup hit cancel 
  5. Recheck Hide protected operating system files in the Folder Options dialog box

 

Follow these Instructions under Windows Vista

  1. Download and extract Notepad2.
  2. Rename Notepad2.exe to notepad.exe.
  3. Find c:\windows\notepad.exe and c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe and set the owner to ‘Administrators’, and grant Administrators full control.
  4. Using Windows Explorer, drag and drop the renamed notepad2.exe to c:\windows and c:\windows\system32.
